EKSPLORASI ETNOMATEMATIKA PADA PURA MANDARA GIRI GUNUNG SELOK DAN SISTEM PERHITUNGAN KALENDER HINDU
Abstract
Mathematics is a universal science, because it is often applied in everyday life and has a fairly close relationship with culture. The relationship between mathematics and culture is called ethnomathematics. The definition of ethnomathematics itself is the study of mathematics from various cultures to find and explore mathematical concepts in the culture of society. The method used in this study is qualitative with an ethnographic approach. This study aims to identify mathematical concepts found in Hindu religious culture, namely in the building of Pura Mandara Giri Gunung Selok Cilacap and the Hindu calendar. The data collection technique used is the data triangulation technique, namely by conducting observations, documentation, and interviews with different sources to achieve data validity. There are three sources as subjects of this study, including the temple caretaker, advisor, and chairman of PHDI Cilacap Regency. The results of this study indicate that the building of Pura Mandara Giri Gunung Selok contains mathematical concepts, such as geometric transformations (reflection and translation), arithmetic sequences, and geometric shapes including plane geometry (isosceles triangles and trapezoids) and space geometry (cubes). This mathematical concept is not only found in temple buildings, but researchers also found mathematical concepts in the Hindu calendar calculation system in determining important Hindu religious days which are calculated based on wewaran and pawukon, by applying the concept of multiplication and LCM (Least Common Multiple). Ethnomathematics can help understand the understanding between formal mathematics and the broader socio-cultural context.
