Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the implementation of tiered muraja’ah based on Az-Zarnuji’s concept of tikrār and the retention of Qur’anic memorization among santri, and tests memorization recall as a mediator. An explanatory quantitative design was applied to all 90 female senior high school santri at Darul Qur’an Boarding School, Mojokerto. Data were collected through a 42-item Likert questionnaire and rubric-based oral tests, and analysed using regression with a percentile bootstrap test of the indirect effect (5,000 resamples). Tiered muraja’ah predicted memorization recall (β = 0.327, p = 0.002) and retention (total effect β = 0.641, p < 0.001), while recall predicted retention (β = 0.343, p < 0.001). The indirect effect through recall was significant (β = 0.112; 95% CI [0.022, 0.218]) and the direct effect remained significant (β = 0.529), indicating partial mediation that accounted for 17.5% of the total effect. This pattern suggests that graded, spaced repetition stabilises old memorization mainly through a direct consolidation route, with stronger recall as an additional pathway. The findings support integrating Az-Zarnuji’s classical pedagogy with memory science in designing structured, data-informed tahfiz programmes.
